Westlab worked with a large Canadian pathology company requiring an alternative to reusable tourniquets which would address two significant challenges:
- Cross contamination with reusable tourniquets
- Cost and inefficient usage
How we helped to create the spec
Westlab worked with the client to present a disposable option which would be easier to manage and would reduce the infection control risks significantly. This would also address cost inefficiencies, where tourniquets were being used as a single use unit due to the infection control challenges.
Engineering to Specification
Westlab initiated multiple rounds of clinical testing to validate the product. We also provided batch testing on the nitrile material to ensure there was no latex or irritants present. This also included a thickness and weight test, consistency test, tensile strength test and elasticity test. These tests were helpful in refining the physical properties to make sure fit for purpose was as broad as possible along the patient spectrum. Following this, we obtained full certification for sale into hospitals.

Change Management
Westlab assisted with a full change management program, including refining and writing operating manuals for phlebotomists and nurses, supporting internal change of methodology and an education/training course. This constituted the full phase in process.
Supply Chain
Once validated, Westlab’s logistics team were able to use forecasts to strategically place stock across the country to match demand. We also worked with the manufacturer to provide stock and production forecasts to the client for maximum visibility.
